Calhoun County has historically utilized its strong tax base to support excellence in public education. The people of the community have built modern facilities and developed the strong academic programs necessary to prepare students for today's information-driven workplace.
Calhoun County Independent School District (CCISD) is a consolidated county-wide system serving an ethnically diverse student population of more than 4,200 students. There are five elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school and an alternative school.
To ensure quality education, CCISD has established an accountability system. Daily classroom activities are monitored by administrators through a testing system that measures the curriculum being instructed. Testing results are reviewed every six weeks to quickly identify successful teaching methods or areas in need of improvement. Local curriculum is aligned to the state standards to offer students the best opportunity for success. CCISD promotes enrichment activities that not only compliment the classroom but give students an opportunity to be successful on an individual level.
Calhoun High School students enjoy a breadth of course offerings comparable to much larger school districts. There is also a dual enrollment program for earning full college credit while providing a comfortable introduction into college for students. Graduates have SAT scores that are above both those of surrounding counties and the Texas state average. Each year the system produces honor students who qualify to enter some of the most prestigious universities in the country. Students are successfully encouraged to exceed the minimal high school graduation requirements with 88% of seniors graduating as Texas Scholars.
Victoria College, the region's community college, offers more than 50 different fields of study in associate and certification programs. Academic degrees include business, interdisciplinary studies and accounting. The college offers a wide range of technical and vocational programs including computer information system and programming, drafting technology, electronics/instrumentation, process technology, welding, network administration, professional office technology and numerous health related programs. The University of Houston-Victoria, a commute of 30 minutes from Port Lavaca, offers upper-division studies for junior, senior and graduate study with bachelor's and master's degree programs in arts and sciences, business administration and education.
Calhoun County can draw on the resources of several other higher education institutions in the region. More than 30 colleges and universities are within a 150-mile radius, including premier research centers at the University of Texas, the Texas A&M system, Rice University and the University of Houston.
